Did the Easter Bunny cause that chocolate blemish?

How chocolate can affect your skin

Let’s be honest, I absolutely love chocolate and I’m sure a lot of us do. Especially around Easter time, when we might eat a little too much!

We don’t really think about how this will affect our skin, so here’s a few tips to consider when eating chocolate or any sugary foods.

Let’s face facts about sugar:

If our diet consists of high amounts of sugar, this can promote pre-mature skin ageing and kick start the process of glycation.

Glycation is one of many natural ageing processes that occur in skin and is the reaction of sugars with proteins and the cross linking of our collagen and elastin. Simple terms - glycation occurs when the sugars (glucose) in our blood stream attach to our proteins (collagen) causing pre-mature ageing. This means over time excessive amounts of sugar intake can make the skin look dull, tired and can became more wrinkled.

Prevention:

  1. Cut back on the sweet foods in your diet - watch for hidden sugars in foods

  2. Wear a broad-spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen every day - more AGEs (advanced glycation end products) occur in sun-exposed skin than in protected skin

  3. Use topical antioxidants (skincare products) and internal antioxidants (foods) – help to fight against free radicals to keep sugars from attaching to proteins. By eating more antioxidant-rich fruits, nuts, and vegetables and by applying topical antioxidants such as green tea and vitamins C and E

  4. Use ingredients that protect your skin from sugar – for example Carnosine to prevent glycation

Studies suggest that chocolate intake may accelerate any present acne on the skin or encourage new breakouts in acne-prone skins. If you don’t have chocolate often, you may experience a breakout spot because your body isn’t use to an increase of sugar in your diet.

For example, if you suffer from acne prone skin you may see an increase in the amount of active breakouts you have and how frequent you are experiencing them. This is because chocolate may encourage the body to respond more aggressively to the type of bacteria that causes acne.
